Position: Director of Fundraising Why I joined SWE: SWE is a great opportunity to make people aware of the opportunities that they may not be aware they have. Personally, SWE has opened my eyes to how diverse the engineering community is and how many people are out there wanting to make a change in the world. I didn't realize how much I belonged in SWE until I joined and saw how supportive and amazing everyone is. Position: Graduate Student Coordinator Why I joined SWE: I joined SWE to network with other smart and inspiring women. I have a strong admiration for my STEM mentors who have overcome odds to excel in a predominately male field, and I seek to provide this mentorship in continuum to encourage others to follow their passions without limitations. The best way to do this is by cultivating a community around this inspiration and support network and that's what SWE is to me. Fun fact: I am very passionate about music production/composition/and performance as a DJ/ Vocalist going by the name Spirah. I see this as another subsect of engineering (audio) that needs strong female voices, and I am passionate about cultivating the same safe community for women in this arena. Maryam Darbeheshti
Position: SWE Faculty Advisor Why I joined SWE: I have been SWE faculty advisor since 2013 and we have seen a lot of growth in our SWE chapter over the years. Being a part of SWE has been a wonderful experience and the fact that many female students have looked to me as their role model and mentor in a male dominated field is one of the greatest achievements of my career.
